Pop quiz! What's the difference between this chair?
And this chair? (besides the color)
Give up? The answer is: about three thousand dollars!
Yeah, I know - that's crazy. They look exactly the same! But they're not.
The first arm chair is created by the renowned furniture designer, Milo Baughman as part of his Goodland collection. It's currently "on sale" on Design within Reach (who's reach? not mine!) for $2,000 - $3,000 depending on which fabric you select.
The second arm chair, called the Mellby, is sold at Ikea for a cool $249. I know pictures can be deceiving, but I looked up the dimensions of both, and they are nearly identical. The only major difference is that the Goodland is about 4 inches wider than the Mellby. Of course the materials used in each are incredibly different, but something about slip cover furniture makes me breath easier.
I don't know about you - but I think I am going to go with the Mellby. Sure, it's the equivalent of buying a purse from The Gap, instead of Louis Vuitton, but spending money on designer has never really been my thing anyway. Especially since my taste is like a revolving door. One day I love it, the next it's deplorable.
What do you think? Is the Mellby a value buy or a knock-off waste?
