Getting Our Juice On

I’ve been wanting to start a “juicing” routine for a while now. I’m not very good at remembering to take my vitamins and both Jay and I admit that we need to incorporate more raw fruits and veggies in our diet. My sister bought me a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juicer for my birthday in October, and it has taken me until the end of February to get going on making some juice. After a couple of weekends of birthday cake, wine, and frozen appetizers it was time to kick the cleansing into high gear!

Yesterday, I asked Jay to pick up some fruit on his way home from work and he came home with a cornucopia! No one said juicing was inexpensive but we’re looking forward to not having to actually eat 6 carrots, an apple, 5 handfuls of kale, and a lemon everyday. Instead, we’ll drink it!

Last night we tried a concoction of oranges, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. It was delicious! Since it was our first foray into juicing, we admittedly made something very delicious and maybe not as nutritious. Today, I am looking for recipes that will incorporate vegetables in the mix. More to come on how that goes!

We definitely ran into some complications on our first juicing attempt. We were both surprised at how intense the blending process was and even though it looks like a pretty simple machine, somehow I overlooked that we needed some sort of receptacle to catch our juice. Within seconds we had orange juice spewing down our cabinets and counter tops. Determined not to be discouraged by this minor oversight, we cleaned, we added a glass in front of the spout and we pushed on in our juicing journey!

Overall, it’s a relatively easy process - we’d spent an equal amount of time preparing a meal. We were a little surprised, however, that our mounds of fruit only yielded about 8 ounces of juice (that we had to share), but realizing how many nutrients were packed into it, we decided it was worth it! We have a lot to learn (better recipes, freezing large batches, and I’m still working on how to put the machine back together again after cleaning) but so far so good! We’ll do our best to keep it up!

Send your juicing recipes my way if you have any you love!
