Herb Infused Vodka

Looking forward to your Friday night cocktail? I am! Especially now that I have a special home made concoction that should be a delicious addition to a vodka martini or vodka tonic.

I am happy to report that in general, the potted herb garden is doing really well! The basil hit some hard times (I think he got a little cold one night) but he is starting to sprout some new leaves so cross your fingers that he is on the up and up. 

Anyway, I am always looking for recipes to incorporate my herbs in. I read an article about jalapeno infused vodka. While Jay may really enjoy that, it wasn’t exactly my cup of vodka tea. Instead, I thought rosemary and lemon would be a great flavor combination to infuse.

As a rule of thumb, you should only take 1/3 the amount of total growth of your herb at one time. Since the rosemary still has some growing to do, I decided to also use the grapefruit mint which has been growing like crazy. Rosemary, mint and lemon - still sounded like a good flavor mix to me.

If you’d like to do this at home, you’ll need a liter of vodka, a carafe for storage, and about a handful of herbs and fruit rinds.

Don’t forget to wash the herbs, fruit, and the carafe (I had just bought mine on clearance from Marshall’s and nobody wants dirty discount store infused vodka, am I right?)

From there, it’s pretty self explanatory. I used a channel knife to peel the lemon and get a couple of twists. I chopped a few of the leaves of rosemary and mint to release the flavor quickly, but for the most part, I left all the herbs in tact.

Now throw all of your ingredients in the carafe with a liter of your favorite vodka and store in a cool, dark place for about 3 to 5 days. I am storing mine in my pantry and trying to ignore it until it is ready.

I have to tell you, it smelled so good I almost couldn’t wait.

My infused vodka should be ready tonight. I’ll let you know how to turns out after the weekend. I plan on making a Rosemary Infused Vodka Tonic with this recipe.
