It was a great weekend to be at the lake! The days were warm and sunny enough to be on the water and the nights were cool enough for cozy campfires. Even though it was a weekend trip, I quickly went back in to vacation mode.
My best friend, Jamie, invited us up to her family’s lake cabin in Algonac, Michigan. It was great to be back. I have a lot of very fond memories of this lake, especially from when we were kids hanging out on the dock.
My favorite memory was when Jamie and I were 12 years old. I was in the lake on an inner-tube talking to Jamie as she walked down the narrow dock. As she moved toward me, she became more involved in the story she was telling than watching where she was going. She ended up walking right off of the dock and plunging into the freezing water mid-story. I paddled over to her and scooped her up in my inner-tube while as we both laughed uncontrollably like it was the funniest thing that had ever happened in our lives. At that point, it probably was! It’s still the first memory I think of when I get to the lake and it’s one we re-tell and laugh about every time we’re there.
This was Jay’s first trip with me. Up until then, it had always been a “girls-only” trip. I knew he would love it, especially the water volleyball tournament…
I don’t know why…he’s not competitive at all.
As for Lucy & I? We hung out on the dock with friends and soaked up the sun. I brought Lucy to the lake last year and she did not like being in the water; however, this year she wasn’t as content on the sidelines. She did a lot of peering into the water and crying….
And then all of the sudden - she jumped in! Actually, it was more of a stumble - I think she changed her mind half way through her descent but nontheless, she was in!
After the initial shock of hitting the water and having her head go under, she was a swimming pro. She paddled over to the water volleyball net and started chasing the ball for 2 HOURS! I couldn’t get her out! It was like a whole other dog.
Finally she tired. She found a nice piece of bark in the lake, scooped it up as a souvenir from her first lake expedition, and climbed up the dog ladder as if she had been doing this for years!
I was really proud of Lu and I think she was pretty impressed with herself too!
Jamie and Chris were amazing hosts! They organized a boating/jet ski expedition to a dockside restaurant for lunch, cooked us mountain pies around the campfire, and told us when we needed to apply more sunscreen. They’re awesome! But above all else, it was so nice to spend time in their company!
It was sad to leave. It felt like the official end of summer but it was a great way to bid it farewell.
Oh, and Lucy slept the whole way home and limped for the next 2 days.
PS - Next year I promise to take way less pictures of Lucy and many more of the fantastic people that I was with!
