I noted in my 50 Shades of Beige post that I wanted to incorporate more color in our living room. That didn’t happen. Not yet at least. Actually, I think I made the room more monochromatic than it was before. Believe it or not, I think it is coming together, just in a different way than I had anticipated.
I did follow through on my threat promise to paint the mantle off white to match the color of the trim. Looking back at it now, I am surprised I even questioned painting it. As MK said, the dark wood completely stops your eye in the room. I guess that’s a bad thing.
Here is what it looked like before.
Now this is in no way a finished product. This picture was taken after we completed 3 coats of primer (is this a joke??) but what a difference the color makes! The room feels much bigger and having the trim and mantle match adds continuity to the room. It just makes much more sense and thank goodness because I was starting to feel pretty lost. It just wasn’t coming together before now.
Here is another angle. Don’t mind Lu, she was having a bad day after she got home from the groomer, so I didn’t shoo her out of the picture.
Not bad, huh?!
Jay hung the drapes this weekend which really helped to pull the room together too! They look like a blush color in this picture, but actually they are champagne. I think I really like them. The length is what is preventing me from saying that I love them but I thought I would try to live with them for a little while. I bought them at Target for $50 so I really want to make them work. In any case, I’m sure our neighbors are glad they don’t have to watch our antics anymore. I have to say, I was getting a little paranoid that they could see all of the bad programming I watch (ie - Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump Rules, Property Brothers).
Anyway, here’s my list of what needs to be done in the living room:
- Paint the mantle
- Buy a comfy rug
- Paint an accent wall
- Add pops of color (pillows, decor, etc)
- New couch (one day!)
- New TV (one that doesn’t look like a black hole)
- Buy and hang drapes (may need to re-evaluate the length 95” v. 105”?)
- Add crown molding
- Paint built ins
- Organize and decorate built ins
- Add moulding in the built in insets
- Add mirror(s) to built in insets
- Hook up surround sound
- New ottoman
- Add ventless fireplace insert
- Find a new home for the black & white prints
I’ll post a photo of the finished mantle just as soon as I can!
