Jay would tell you that I am not a saver, but after this super find, I think even he’d have to agree that I can spot a great value.
A few months ago, my mom and I went to It’s New to Me, a consignment shop in Wexford. I noticed this beautiful pendant light that resembled some of the designs that I have seen in my favorite catalogues lately. After finding out from the saleswoman that it was $180, I decided it was more than I wanted to spend, especially since I didn’t really have anywhere to put it. Instead I’m sure I spent nearly as much money that day on unneeded knick-knacks…but that’s a whole other story!
Anyway, a couple of months later, my mom and I returned to the shop. The pendant was still there, and I had been thinking about it a lot. I decided I would try to strike a deal. I asked the saleswoman if she would sell it for $100 since it had been in the shop for so long. I didn’t expect her to say yes - but she did! Although, I was totally pumped on the inside, I tried not to let it show. This is a negotiation after all. So I asked her to take the pendant down so that I could inspect it for damage. My mom and I realized that it was missing the chain to hang it, but we knew we could easily buy another or ask for one through the manufacturer. While we were in the store, we did some digging online and realized that this particular piece was the large bronze Eldridge Pendant from Ballard Designs and retailed for $339! Now I was really excited and determined to make it work.
It didn’t seem like the shop really knew what the had, so I pressed a little further to see if they would bring down the price a little more since the chain was missing. I asked for her to lower the price to $80 and to my amazement - she agreed! That’s a savings of $260 my friends!!
Goes to show you, you just need to ask for what you want when it comes to consignment stores!
All I need to figure out now is where to hang it. If only I had this enormous laundry room with 12 foot ceilings like the Ballard Design catalogue. Uh…does that really exist?
My initial thought was to hang it above the master bathroom tub, but after taking a second look, I realized it was much too big for that space. Now, I am considering hanging similar to how it is shown below in my office with a very short chain.
I’ll keep your posted where this beauty ends up!
